Underbalance

Underbalanced Drilling = The pressure in the wellbore is less than that in the formation

When do you need to drill underbalanced?

If the wells are at low pressure, or there is risk of damage to the formation, it is vital to drill underbalanced to ensure that the reservoir is protected and maximum production is achieved. Operating underbalanced will also ensure that revenue is not lost as it allows production to continue even whilst drilling.

Why CTD?

CTD is unique in that it is the only solution that provides the ability to drill underbalanced 100% of the time.

When traditional jointed pipe is used, underbalanced conditions can be lost when making a connection. This can damage the formation and can even cause the well to permanently stop producing. CTD is a closed system and this combined with the use of energized fluids (eg Nitrogen) ensures that downhole pressures are maintained and it remains underbalanced.
